In 1995, the Buddy Pelletier Surfing Scholarship Foundation was started in memory of Buddy Pelletier. He was a former top ranked shortboarder with the APS in the 1980's. Going back to his Longboard roots shortly before his death he came full circle in his passion for a sport called surfing.

The Buddy Pelletier Surfing Foundation is to operate for charitable, educational and humanitarian purposes. It will operate for these purposes as well as to engage in fund-raising endeavors and to also receive contributions in support of the Buddy Pelletier Surfing Foundation. This Foundation has been established to support the Educational and Humanitarian needs of the East Coast surfing community and it’s youth. Founded 1995

The Foundation is very proud that the East Coast Surfing Championships, held annually in Virginia Beach,
the US's oldest Surfing Competition and second oldest in the world, has recognized Buddy's contribution to the sport by naming their Sportsmanship award after Buddy. Proving you can be competitive and a sportsman in the "Sport of Kings".

Buddy was inducted into the East Coast Surfing Legends Hall of Fame in 2000 for his contributions to the sport of Surfing through competition and through his involvement with young surfers in
North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and Florida.

Every year at ECSC we select someone to receive the Buddy Pelletier ECSC Sportsman Award.  It is given as a tribute to those individuals who by their actions, attitude or contributions illustrate true sportsmanship.  This is the most important trophy given at ECSC and we are proud to continue the heritage of the sport and to reward those individuals who lead by example.
